America loves it Superhero movies, but is it ready for the amount of movies coming it”s way over the next few years? Will Superhero’s become the new Call Me Maybe? Super overplayed and we just want to skip every time it comes on? We wonder if the lesser known superhero’s like Jessica Jones, Sandman, and Ant Man will be able to keep up with the pack…will Americans spend 12 bucks to watch characters they did not grow up with watching on TV or on the big screen? And with the drama of the Ant Man movie, is Marvel being too ambitious, trading quantity for quality? And the same can be asked for DC, are they just trying to play catch up with Marvel? And with so many story lines connecting will we care about stand alones like Spiderman and X-Men?
Frankly, we say bring it on! We are so excited for all the superhero films, the 10 year olds living inside us are jumping in fits of joy. But if not done right, we ca easily go into a dark time for super hero movies, where the studios will not want to be tied to the passing trend. We think a lot falls on the shoulders of Ant Man and Batman vs. Superman. Ant Man will be the first solo film for a superhero who is not a house hold man. The Guardians of the Galaxy are facing a similar challenge, but by being a group made of amazing actors, no one superhero has to stand on their own. And with Batman vs. Superman, one film will contain Batman, Superman, Aqua Man, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg. Why are DC putting all their eggs in on basket? If the movie is another Green Lantern, DC will have kill any chances of beating Marvel, and DC can not afford to have a bad Batman film, it’s their only saving
grace.

I would say both Iron Man and Thor were not household names, and nobody in the mainstream audience grew up with either one in their lives. But Marvel made good movies, and people respond to good movies. Name recognition and popularity definitely help, as with the cases of Batman and Superman, but making a good, quality movie can be just as good. I think Ant-Man will do fine.
And there will only be too many superhero movies when they start degrading in quality. If Marvel keeps up the string of great movies, then people will not get bored of them. In my mind, superhero movies are just action movies with the main character in a costume. And there have always been action movies.

Great post, and something that I have pondered. With Hollywood, if a formula works, they stick with it. Hey, they are still pairing up male/female investigative partners long after Mulder and Scully. I will probably not see all those movies (particularly not ANOTHER f-in Wolverine), but there are some that have me pretty pumped, specifically Guardians, Doctor Strange, and Sandman. All they need to do now is come up with a Witchblade film (I was sad when the series ended so suddenly). Anyway, thanks for posting and look forward to reading your thoughts on these films when they come out.

In the dawn of the age of geeks, i say there can never be too many (good) superhero movies.
I think it is a worrying predicament facing the genre, especially if the run of DC films – and potentially Marvel’s Ant-Man or Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot – come out with lower quality for being rushed (or in FF’s case, made simply to hold onto the license).
People won’t tire of them for a long time if they remain fun and entertaining, much like the cheesy action movies of the 80’s and early 90’s, but if they churn out lower quality just to increase quantity then they will irreparably damage the reputation of comic books and the associated projects.
